Local drone club meets March 6 to discuss legal issues faced by pilots – by Tara Flanagan

If you’re an unmanned aerial system (drone) pilot or are thinking about becoming one, the March 6 meeting of the Central Colorado UAS Club might help you sort out any questions you have about the legal aspects pilots face.

Zach Dougherty of Anderson Law Group will provide some insight about the legal and liability issues of flying drones.

“The landscape is in great flux, and just because the regulation updates say we can fly over people at night, it doesn’t mean the liability goes away,” said a club release. “You’ll want to hear what Zach has to say about this.”

The meeting will be held at the Central Colorado Regional Airport at 9:00 a.m. You may attend in person, or to get your Zoom link, contact Taylor at ccuasclub@gmail.com.

The February meeting of the Central Colorado club set a record attendance, featuring Chris Robertson, director of Colorado State University’s Drone Program. to watch the presentation, pull up the club’s YouTube channel here.

Looking ahead, plan on the morning of April 21 to attend the Spring UAS Roundup with keynote speaker Kevin Morris from the FAA. Morris will address the new rules affecting drones and Rule CFR Part 107. The focus for the half-day session is how changed regulations will impact operations for those in commercial, public safety and education.

Additional speakers will be identified in the near future as schedules are confirmed. If possible, a two-day in-person event will be planned for the Fall of 2021 in Buena Vista. April’s event is hosted by Central Colorado UAS, the Colorado Office of Economic Development & International Trade, and the Chaffee County Economic Development Corporation.

Information will be available at UASRoundup.com.
